BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (25-16, 10-4 Big Ten) took both ends of its double header on Friday, first defeating the Northwestern Wildcats, 2-1, before a late inning, come-from- behind walk off victory in game two, 4-3.
Game One – Indiana 2, Northwestern 1
Senior Kyle Hart went the first 6.2 innings on the bump and allowed just one run in the effort. He mixed nine hits with five strikeouts, including four punch outs in consecutive at bats. Junior Thomas Belcher picked up his seventh save after a 2.1-inning showing. He held the Wildcats to just one hit.
Junior Austin Cangelosi picked up two of the Hoosiers' five hits and scored a run. The bottom of Indiana's lineup delivered its two scoring plays, as freshman Luke Miller and junior Tony Butler each drove in a run.
The Wildcats manufactured the game's first run in the top of the first. A lead-off single to left field turned into a run after a bloop-single to no-man's land in left center field. Hart snagged a liner to end the frame. Northwestern got its first two batters to reach safely in the second before Fineman went across the diamond to pick off the lead runner at second base in the first of three-straight outs.
Two-out hitting helped Indiana take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Cangelosi led off with a single up the middle. A groundout and wild pitch put Cangelosi in position to score on Miller's RBI single to right field. After Miller stole second, Butler's full count single to left field brought Miller around to make it 2-1.
The Wildcats put their first two batters on again in the fourth inning before Hart froze Northwestern's next three batters at the plate, stranding the go-ahead run at first base. The Wildcats again looked to be in position to tie the game in the fifth but an assist at second base by junior Alex Krupa ended the chance to plate the runner rounding third.
Both squads traded silent sixth innings, while a diving stop by Cangelosi on the line at first base helped to keep the Wildcats at bay in the seventh.
Indiana carried a one-run lead into the final frame. Northwestern led off with a double down the line in left and put two on with a one-out walk. Belcher picked up the inning's second out by way of a strikeout before Cangelosi snagged the game-clincher at first base.
Game 1 Notes: Austin Cangelosi had two hits, his sixth multi-hit game of the season… Luke Miller's second inning single marked the 28th game this season he has got a hit, the second most on the team… LHP Kyle Hart extended his nationally leading win count to nine games… This was Hart's sixth quality start (6 IP, 3 ER or less) of the season… In his last 13 starts, Hart has thrown 92.1 innings, allowing 82 hits, 20 earned runs and striking out 65 batters while only walking 13… This win was the Hoosiers 70th win at Bart Kaufman Field.
Game Two – Indiana 4, Northwestern 3
Senior Caleb Baragar struck out seven batters in five innings to go along with six hits and two runs allowed. Freshman Jonathan Stiever lasted three innings, with junior Jake Kelzer picking up the victory in an inning of work.
Baragar worked around a leadoff double to retire the side in the first before Sophomore Laren Eustace beat out an infield single and junior Craig Dedelow went the opposite way to reach base to open the Hoosiers' half of the first inning. A wild pitch pushed both runners into scoring position before an unconventional double play wiped the threat away.
Northwestern worked around two strikeouts in the top of the second and strung together enough two-out hitting to push the game's first run across the plate. The Wildcats capitalized on a failed pick-off attempt in the fourth to up its lead to 2-0.
The Wildcats retired 14-straight Hoosiers before sophomore Tony Butler got on in the bottom of the sixth with a one out single to right center field. Krupa followed with a pinch hit single back up the middle to put two on. Dedelow tagged a ball to deep center field, but it was brought in at the warning track to keep Indiana off the board.
After a sacrifice fly scored Northwestern's third run of the game in the top of the eighth, Wilhite got Indiana on the board in the bottom half. A ball hit to the corner in the right field corner granted Wilhite an inside-the-park home run, trimming the Hoosiers' deficit to 3-1. Krupa then sent a pitch back up the middle for a one-out single and came around to score on Dedelow's double down the line in right field. Two wild pitches split between a walks to sophomore Logan Sowers and freshman Ryan Fineman loaded the bases for Cangelosi to drive in the tying run off a sacrifice fly.
Indiana worked two-out magic to walk-off in the ninth. Butler stroked a two-out single and jumped two bases on Krupa's single to right. Dedelow was then able to send Butler home by beating out a ball hit behind the first base bag.
