WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana Softball split a Tuesday doubleheader with Purdue, picking up game one, 1-0, before dropping the final meeting, 6-4.
Freshman Tara Trainer was dominant in the first game to pick up her third complete game shutout of the season as Trainer and Purdue's Lilly Fecho battled it out in the circle.
After allowing two walks in the first and a walk and bunt single in the third, Trainer settled in to retire 14 straight Boilermakers. The righty collected eight strikeouts in the win, included three straight to end the game.
The lone run of the game was brought in via a sacrifice fly from junior Erin Lehman to plate sophomore Rebecca Blitz in the fourth inning. Blitz reached after the Purdue third baseman made an errant throw on a grounder. The ball was thrown to foul territory, allowing Blitz to advance all the way to third base. Purdue's Lauren Stewart made a diving catch on Lehman's flyout, but it was hit deeply enough to score Blitz.
Senior Shannon Cawley looked to build on the momentum as she then hit a two-out double to left center on the game's only extra-bases hit, but a flyout ended the inning.
After a pitcher's duel was the storyline of the first game, the second meeting featured a trio of homers, including a pair of two-run shots for the Hoosiers. All of the game's runs came in the fifth inning or later.
Indiana didn't get a runner on base until the fifth when redshirt senior Shannon Cawley drew a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice bunt from senior Michelle Huber, senior Kassi Farmer homered to left center to give Indiana a 2-0 lead. The home run was Farmer's first of the season and 15th of her career.
However, the lead did not last past the inning as Purdue scored four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead. After a leadoff walk and hit batter put two on, Kristen Hoppman tripled to right field to tie the game up. A pair of Indiana miscues led to Purdue taking the lead as a passed ball plated Hoppman before a Hoosier field error scored the fourth run of the game.
The Boilermakers added onto their lead in sixth as a two-run homer by Emily Kenny to left made it 6-2.
IU didn't go quietly as Cawley led off the final inning with a single to center, followed by a two-run homer by Huber to cut the deficit to 6-4. Senior Katelyn Conenna then drew a one-out walk, but she was stranded.
Indiana returns to action at Andy Mohr Field this weekend as the Hoosiers play host to Penn State in a three-game set.
