BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball dropped game one of the series against Penn State on Friday, falling to the Nittany Lions at Andy Mohr Field, 13-3.
Penn State (18-16, 7-2 Big Ten) plated all of its runs in the fourth inning or later and knocked 12 hits in the win.
Indiana (21-15, 4-5 Big Ten) did jump out to an early 2-0 advantage in the second on a trio of hits and a Nittany Lion fielding error. After senior Katelyn Conenna doubled with one away, sophomore Taylor Uden singled up the middle to bring in the first run of the game. Sophomore Rachel O'Malley then doubled to right, pushing Uden to third before Uden rounded for home as the Penn State right fielder bobbled the ball and allowed the Hoosiers to plate another run. Conenna finished the game with a pair of hits and a walk in the effort.
However, Penn State took the lead for good in the fourth as a run scored on a wild pitch, followed by a two-RBI double by Macy Jones to make it 3-2. The Nittany Lions further extended their lead in the fifth as they scored four runs on a pair of two-run singles from Lexi Knief and Erin Pond.
The Hoosiers got one back in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Rebecca Blitz brought in freshman Sarah Galovich, who had reached on a double off the wall in left center.
A three-run double from Alyssa VanDerveer pushed the Nittany Lions lead to 10-3 before an Indiana fielding error allowed three more runs to score in the seventh inning.
Freshman pitcher Tara Trainer took the loss as she allowed six runs in 4.0 innings in the circle.
Indiana and Penn State return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. The theme of the game is Think Pink in support of breast cancer awareness and will feature special t-shirts to the first 200 fans in attendance. Admission to all IU Softball home games free of charge.
