CINCINNATI, Ohio - Two, two-run innings helped leverage Indiana Baseball (14-13) over the Cincinnati Bearcats, 7-3, on Wednesday night from Marge Scott Stadium.
Five different Hoosiers drove in at least one run, with freshman Luke Miller leading the way with two RBI. Junior Tony Butler collected two hits in the effort to cap off a 2-for-3 night at the plate, while senior Brian Wilhite also had a two-hit game. Freshman Jonathan Stiever got the nod for the Hoosiers and went three innings, surrendering just three hits and striking out one. In all, Indiana's pitching staff scattered just six hits and held the Bearcats scoreless in the final five innings of the game. Freshman Paul Milto went two innings and collected the victory, while sophomore B.J. Sabol, junior Thomas Belcher and junior Jake Kezler combined for four scoreless innings.
Indiana spotted Stiever with some early run support in the first, as fielding miscues by the Bearcats allowed sophomore Laren Eustace to move into scoring position on a dropped third strike and throwing error. After cleanly swiping third base, Eustace trotted home on freshman Ryan Fineman's fielder's choice. Stiever silenced Cincinnati on just eight pitches in the opening frame.
The Bearcats found an answer in the home half of the second, as a two-out drag bunt single allowed the runner at third to sneak home. Stiever would limit the damage and end the frame with a pickoff at first base.
The Hoosiers regained their lead with a two-run third inning. Junior Craig Dedelow walked and junior Austin Cangelosi took a free base off a hit by pitch, setting Miller up for his 2-RBI double to left field. Another two-run inning began for Indiana in the fourth with sophomore Isaiah Pasuter working a four-pitch walk. He stole second before advancing to third on Tony Butler's bunt single. Eustace followed with an RBI groundout, which plated Pasteur and moved Butler up 90 feet. A wild pitch pushed Butler to third base, which allowed Dedelow to drive him home off a sacrifice fly to right.
The Bearcats were able to trim the deficit to 5-3 in the home half of the fourth with two runs off two hits but Sabol was able to strand one runner with a pop out at third base. After Butler led off the sixth with a double and Eustace walked, Dedelow's sacrifice bunt drew an errant throw over the first baseman's head, allowing Butler to touch home. Eustace then scored IU's final run of the contest off Cangelosi's fielder's choice.
Milto logged two innings and retired six of the seven batters he faced. Belcher worked around a one-out walk in the eighth before turning the game over the Kezler for the ninth.
Indiana returns home for a three-game set against the Purdue Boilermakers this weekend. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. on Friday, April 8 from Bart Kaufman Field.
