Hoosiers Drop Match Against No. 5 Ohio State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team came up short against No. 5 Ohio State in a 4-0 defeat on Friday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (5-14) played the Buckeyes (22-2) close to open the match in doubles, but Ohio State ultimately won two of the three matches by scores of 6-3 to earn the doubles point.
Sophomore Raheel Manji, who played at No. 1 singles, drew a large crowd to his match against No. 2 ranked Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State. Against Torpegaard, who came into the match with a 17-0 record in dual match play Manji won an emotional first set 7-6 with a 7-2 tiebreak.
Senior Chris Essick also took early control of his match with a 6-1 first set win.
The Hoosiers fell at No. 4 and No. 4 singles as Ohio State mounted a 3-0 lead in the match. At No. 3 singles Matthew McCoy, who played the No. 35 ranked player in the country battled back from a 5-0 deficit in his second set to get it to 5-2 after he dropped the first set.
Before the remaining matches could finish the Buckeyes got a win at No. 2 singles by another ranked player to secure the 4-0 victory.
Up next the Hoosiers host a doubleheader on Sunday with No. 33 Penn State at 11:00 a.m. and Butler at 5:00 p.m.
