Panchot’s Late Winner Gives IU 1-0 Win Over Notre Dame

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In front of a crowd of 1,100 fans on a cold night in Fort Wayne, the Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 1-0, in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Austin Panchot score the match winner for the Hoosiers in the 88th minute, while Trevor Swartz notched an assist. Phil Fives had two shots, getting one on goal for IU.
In the first half, the Hoosiers had the better of the possession, but weren't able to break through on the scoreboard. In the first 45 minutes, shots (2-2), shots on goal (1-1) and corner kicks (3-3) were all even.
In goal, Lomeli made a great save on Notre Dame's first shot of the game, sprawling to his left to make a save at the near post and keep the Irish scoreless.
In the 57th minute, the Hoosiers had another corner kick. Swartz's ball in found a running Mehl, but his header at the near post went just wide from eight yards.
Six minutes later, Fives took a look from distance, as his curling, right-footed shot towards the far left post was saved on a sprawling dive by the Irish keeper.
In the 88th minute, Swartz fired a shot from 35 yards out that the Notre Dame goalie was unable to handle. Panchot was there for the rebound, burying his shot from eight yards out for the match winner for the Hoosiers.
For the match, IU out-shot Notre Dame, 10-4, getting four shots on goal to just one for the Fighting Irish. Indiana also had a 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on April 15 when the team will face Butler in Westfield, Ind. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
Indiana will conclude the spring season on April 24 when the squad will play host to the Mexico U-20 National Team at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. ET in Bloomington. Tickets for the match are available at IUHoosiers.com.
