BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In her final game at Andy Mohr Field, senior Michelle Huber delivered as she blasted a sixth-inning grand slam to propel the Hoosiers to a 5-3 victory against (RV/#25) Ohio State on Sunday afternoon.
The win clinched the weekend series for Indiana (26-23, 8-12 Big Ten) marking the first time since 2011 IU has taken a series from the Buckeyes (30-14-1, 12-7-1 Big Ten). The Hoosiers also picked up a win in the series opener on Friday afternoon, 5-4.
The Hoosiers scored five unanswered to win the game as they fell behind early on a three-run homer by Emily Clark in the third inning. Clark's shot to dead centerfield brought in Cammi Prantl and Alex Bayne.
After going down in order in the bottom of third, Indiana looked to answer in the fourth as a one-out walk to junior CaraMia Tsirigos and double down the left field line by Huber put two on. After senior Alyssa Rosati came in to run for Tsirigos, senior Kelsey Dotson hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Rosati and close the gap to 3-1.
Next inning, Ohio State used an Indiana fielding error and a walk to put two in scoring position with two away, but freshman pitcher Josie Wood forced a groundout to end the threat. Wood, who earned the win, tossed 4.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
A walk to junior Erin Lehman started things off for the Hoosiers in the sixth before a double by redshirt senior Shannon Cawley and walk to Tsirigos loaded the bases. Huber then smacked her second career grand slam to right center to give Indiana the lead for good.
Freshman Tara Trainer, who got the start, re-entered in the final frame and picked up her first career save. The seventh inning wasn't without some drama as a walk and single put a pair of Buckeyes on with one out. However, Trainer forced a pair of fly outs to end the game.
Up next, the Hoosiers head east to Maryland in the final matchup of the regular season. After the three-game set with the Terrapins, Indiana will head to Penn State for the Big Ten Tournament.
