COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana Softball swept a Saturday doubleheader against Maryland, taking game one, 8-3, before defeating the Terrapins in five innings, 12-1. The Hoosiers saw eight different players register at least one hit in both games as they secured the series.
In game one, sophomore Taylor Uden exploded for four RBI on two hits to pace the Indiana offense.
The Hoosiers plated a trio of runs in the opening frame, all with two outs. After redshirt senior Shannon Cawley's single through the left side, junior CaraMia Tsirigos and senior Michelle Huber earned walks to load the bags. Senior Kelsey Dotson then singled right back up the middle to score Cawley before a two-run single to left by Uden made it 3-0.
After retiring the first four Terrapins in order, freshman pitcher Tara Trainer gave up the first hit of the game on a single to center by Sarah Lang. However, on the next batter, Huber made a basket catch in left and completed the double play as she caught the runner a few feet off the first base bag.
Indiana tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a two-run double from sophomore Erin Lehman to left. Back-to-back leadoff singles by freshman Sarah Galovich and sophomore Rebecca Blitz set the stage for Lehman.
Maryland led off the home half of the fourth with two walks, followed by a single from Kristina Dillard to load the bases. Freshman Josie Wood then stepped into the circle and picked up the first out before giving up a bases-loaded walk to score Skylynne Ellazar. However, the Hoosiers escaped further damage as Uden made a pair of nice stops at first base to end the inning.
The Terrapins plated their second run of the day in the sixth on an RBI single by Jordan Aughinbaugh to bring in Dillard.
In the final frame, Indiana posted another three-run inning with two more RBI from Uden, as her double landed on the right field line to plate Huber. Indiana also scored a run as an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Dotson allowed senior Alyssa Rosati to make it home.
Maryland would add one more run in the home half of the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Ellazar to score Destiney Henderson. However, Wood forced a flyout to end the game.
Game two was highlighted by a pair of three-run homers from Huber, marking her first multi-home run game of her career and setting a new high for single-game RBI totals.
The matchup started similar to the first with the Hoosiers plating all their first-inning runs with two outs. After Cawley reached on a Maryland throwing error, Tsirigos singled and Huber walked to load the bases for Dotson, who earned a walk to bring Cawley in. Uden then continued her impressive day behind the plate as she knocked a two-run double off the wall in right center to extend the Hoosier lead to 4-0.
The Terrapins threated to cut into the deficit in the second as they loaded the bases with two outs on a double and a pair of walks. But, Trainer forced a pop out to short to end the inning.
Cawley led off the third frame by extending her hitting streak to seven games on a single to left. Following a walk to Tsirigos, Huber blasted a three-run homer that left little doubt to push the Hoosier lead to 7-0.
Maryland responded in the home half of the inning as an RBI single by Dillard plated Ellazar. Sophomore Emily Kirk then stepped in the circle to relieve Trainer and retired the first three batters faced to end the inning.
However, the Hoosiers would plate four runs in the following frame to take an 11-1 advantage. After a sacrifice fly by Cawley brought in Blitz, Huber knocked her second homer of the game on a shot to center. Following a grand slam against Ohio Sate on Sunday, Huber has now hit three home runs in the last three games, bringing her season total to five.
IU's final run of the game came on an RBI single by Aimilia McDonough to score Lehman in the fifth as the Hoosier picked up their third run-rule decision win of the year.
Indiana (28-23, 10-12 Big Ten) and Maryland (11-40, 3-19 Big Ten) will close out the regular season tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus, as well as a live radio broadcast on IUHoosiers.com.
