LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Indiana Baseball (31-19) held the fifth-ranked Louisville Cardinals scoreless through five innings and jumped ahead 2-0 midway through, but eventually dropped a 9-2 contest to the Cardinals on Tuesday night from Jim Patterson Stadium.
Freshman Jonathan Stiever tossed a competitive 3.2 innings for Indiana, allowing just four hits to the 15 batters he faced, while picking up two key strikeouts and holding the Cardinals scoreless.
Junior Craig Dedelow led the Hoosiers offensively with two doubles and was responsible for both of Indiana's runs. Juniors Austin Cangelosi, Alex Krupa and freshman Colby Stratten picked up Indiana's other three hits, with Krupa and Stratten both scoring a run.
Stiever worked out of early trouble in the top of the first. With runners on second and third and just one out, the freshman froze back-to-back batters and sent the game into the second frame scoreless. He continued to keep Louisville off balance through the next two innings.
Dedelow went the opposite way for his team-leading 15th double in the top of the fourth. A walk to Cangelosi, along with a groundout by sophomore Logan Sowers put runners on the corners, but Louisville's Kade McClure picked up a strikeout to eliminate Indiana's chance. Louisville mirrored the Hoosiers in the bottom half when a leadoff double resulted in a runner at third, but junior Luke Stephenson entered with two away and picked up a strikeout, keeping the game scoreless.
Indiana found the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with the help of Dedelow's second double in as many at bats. Stratten and Krupa both found the outfield for back-to-back singles and came around to score on Dedelow's one-hopper down the right field line, giving the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead.
After being shutout through the first five innings, Louisville capitalized on an Indiana throwing error and struck for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead. The Cardinals added a ninth run in the eighth inning.
The Hoosiers close out the regular season with a three-game set at Nebraska beginning on Thursday. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. Indiana is a half game out of first place in the Big Ten standings entering Thursday's game.
