LINCOLN, Neb. — Indiana baseball (31-20, 15-7 Big Ten) dropped its series opener to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 4-1, on Thursday evening from Haymarket Park.
Senior Kyle Hart struck out five in six innings, mixing six hits for three runs. Junior Luke Stephenson went the final two innings and allowed three hits.
Junior Craig Dedelow picked up one of three Indiana hits in the game and drove in the Hoosiers' lone RBI on a solo home run in the top of the ninth. Junior Alex Krupa and senior Brian Wilhite also collected hits in the effort.
The Cornhuskers got a pair of runners into scoring position in the bottom of the first but Hart forced a grounder back to him to pick up the third out. The Hoosiers' lefty went on to retire the next eight-straight, including back-to-back punch outs in the third.
Krupa broke though for the Hoosiers' first base runner to open the fourth frame, capitalizing on a Nebraska fielding error. His 14th stolen base of the season moved Krupa into scoring position with no outs, but Indiana would be unable to score. Hart worked around a two-out base runner in the bottom half with the help of a strong defensive play by Dedelow, who brought in the third out with a diving catch.
Nebraska's Steven Reveles tried to steal third base in the bottom of the fifth, but freshman Ryan Fineman gunned him down, stranding a runner at first. Krupa followed that up in the top of the sixth, when he bounced a two-strike single through the right side to break up Nebraska's no-hit bid, but he would be frozen at first base. The Cornhuskers used a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to break the scoreless tie.
After junior Austin Cangelosi reached base on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth, Wilhite looped a single to left field to bring the tying run to the plate, but Nebraska turned a double play to wipe the Hoosiers' threat. The Cornhuskers helped their cause in the bottom half with an insurance run, upping its lead to 4-0.
Dedelow sent a towering one-out solo home run the opposite way in the top of the ninth to avoid the shutout.
Indiana looks to even the series tomorrow night at 7:35 p.m. ET.
