BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Indiana University Rowing team was named the winner of the Program of Excellence Challenge for the 2015-16 academic year by the Indiana University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
"This award is really a testament to our student-athletes and the time and effort they put into being an energetic part of the athletic department and campus as a whole," Indiana rowing head coach Steve Peterson said. "This was something that was very important to our team and we are proud of everything that we were able to achieve in this program."
The team was recognized at a dinner with Indiana University Director of Athletics Fred Glass earlier this month.
The Program of Excellence Challenge is part of the Excellence Academy at IU, where student-athletes are encouraged to participate in a variety of programs and activities that are designed to enhance their experience and provide them with the skills and abilities to be the best they can be in all aspects of life.
Each of the 24 varsity sports participate in the challenge throughout the year and earn points by attending various SAAC meetings, Freshmen Excellence sessions, Emerging Leaders, speaker series, Hoosier Pride Days and peer mentoring to name a few.
Community Engagement also plays a part in the challenge and the rowing team completed a total of 838 hours of community service in and around the Bloomington area.
