MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A late-inning comeback fell short on Saturday afternoon, as Indiana Baseball (27-17, 12-5 Big Ten) fell to the 19th-ranked Minnesota Gophers (30-14, 12-4 Big Ten), 8-6, to even the series at 1-1.
Senior Caleb Baragar got the start on the bump and lasted 3.2 innings before turning the game over to the Indiana bullpen. The lefty mixed seven hits and four strikeouts in the effort. Freshman Jonathan Stiever tossed three scoreless innings in relief, holding the Gophers to just one hit.
Freshman Ryan Fineman drove in a run, while junior Craig Dedelow picked up his 12th double of the season in a two-hit day at the plate, while also driving in a run. Senior Brian Wilhite also grabbed two hits and an RBI and scored a run. Sophomore Tony Butler added an RBI to go along with a run scored.
Indiana struck in the first inning for the second time in as many days. Dedelow pushed two into scoring position with a double to right-center field, while Fineman's sacrifice fly plated junior Alex Krupa, who walked to open the game. A lead-off double for Minnesota in the bottom half was wiped away following a strikeout and lengthy relay to nail the runner at the plate, keeping the score 1-0.
Minnesota pulled ahead to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run, but the Hoosiers quickly tied the game at 2-all in the top half of the third. Butler was given a free pass with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second off a stolen base. He came around to score on sophomore Logan Sowers' single. The Gophers used the long ball again in the home half of the third to take a one-run lead, 3-2.
Junior Austin Cangelosi got as far as third in the top of the fourth before the Gophers tacked on back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth to take a 7-2 lead. The Hoosiers then tried to chip away at their 8-2 deficit again in the seventh frame but would be unable to capitalize on back-to-back singles by Dedelow and Sowers.
A pinch hit walk to freshman Luke Miller sparked the Hoosiers' offense for four runs in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Chris Lowe's double gave Indiana two runners in scoring position. Back-to-back singles by Wilhite and Butler plated two runs, while a throwing error from centerfield on Butler's hit granted Lowe to score, trimming the deficit to 8-5. Dedelow brought Indiana within two runs with a sacrifice fly.
The Hoosiers got the leadoff guy on in the top of the ninth and Fineman walked, but a double play quickly erased the Indiana threat.
The rubber match of this three-game series gets underway tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
