INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana University diving program had a tremendous first day at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials at the IU Natatorium on Saturday in Indianapolis.
Current IU diver Jessica Parratto and Indiana alumna Amy Cozad lead the women's 10-meter platform synchro, while current IU diver Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman of Miami (FL) lead the men's 3-meter synchro headed in to Wednesday night's finals.
"Day 1 of the U.S. Olympic Trials has been on our calendar for a long time," Indiana head diving coach Drew Johansen said. " We knew we'd have an opportunity to stake our claim in the synchro events and we're off to a great start. All three divers delivered today, but we know that no lead is safe, especially here. We will keep going one dive at a time, but we're in good shape."
The three Hoosiers are now just one step away earning a spot on Team USA and punching their ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. At the Trials, scores will be cumulative over three lists of dives (preliminaries, semifinals and finals). The top team in each of the men's synchronized 3-meter and synchronized 10-meter events will be selected to the U.S. Olympic Team.
Parratto and Cozad jumped out to an early advantage in the 10-meter women's synchro, taking the lead after the morning prelims with a score of 306.00. Leading by 9.94 points headed in to the semifinals, the IU duo extended their advantage in the semifinals, posting a score of 617.28 points on their two lists of dives.
Parratto and Cozad lead the team of Anna James and Katrina Young by 41.28 points heading in to Wednesday's final.
For the men, Hixon and Dorman, competing in their first meet as a duo, got off to a great start on Saturday morning, posting a score of 440.22. The pair extended their lead over London Olympic bronze medalists Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen in the semifinals.
Headed in to Wednesday night's finals, Hixon and Dorman lead T. Dumais and Ipsen, 871.53 to 815.01.
The finals of the 3-meter synchro at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials will be on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Live coverage of both finals will air live on NBC Sports Network and online with NBC Sports Live Extra.
The Indiana divers will have a light workout on Sunday before competing in the men's three-meter and women's platform preliminary round on Monday.
