Hoosiers Send Five to the NCAA Championships
6/6/2016 10:46:00 AM | Track and Field
A total of five Hoosiers will make the trip to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Finals this week. In order to qualify for the finals these student-athletes had to finish in the top 12 at the East Regional Meet in Jacksonville, Fla. a couple of weekends ago.
Daniel Kuhn will run in the 800m semifinal on Wednesday at approximately 9:15PM EST. He is seeded 16th in the event based on his time at the Regional Meet. However, his time from the Arizona State meet earlier this season is tied for the ninth fastest time in the field. If he makes it into the finals he will run at 9:45PM EST on Friday.
Willie Morrison is seeded seventh in the shot put. Morrison has been on fire lately, breaking his own personal best in each of his last three competitions. His latest mark of 19.27m (63ft 2.75in) is good for second in the school record books. His advancement to the finals also marks the first time since 1991 that a freshman thrower will represent the Hoosiers in the NCAA meet.
At 5:00PM EST Laura Schroeder and Nakel McClinton will battle it out in the women's hammer throw. Schroeder is seeded seventh. After winning the Big Ten Championship in the event she went onto place second in the Regional Meet to punch her ticket to Tracktown. McClinton will look to get back on track this week. She was the runner-up in the Big Ten Championship and squeaked in with a 12th place finish at the East Regional. She will be seeded 24th but her school record mark of 65.12m (213ft 8in) from earlier in the season is the fifth best throw of the group.
Rounding out the Indiana attack in Eugene, Ore. is Sydney Clute. After a historic Big Ten Championship title she cleared every bar she attempted this past weekend. Action will begin around 8:00PM EST for the women's pole vault. She is seeded seventh in a loaded pole vault field.
