BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer kicked off the 2016 season on Friday, drawing with Louisville at Bill Armstrong Stadium, 1-1.
Junior Annelie Leitner gave the Hoosiers the early advantage in the fourth minute as she picked up a deflected pass sent in by junior Kayla Smith, and scored her third career goal off of Louisville keeper Taylor Bucklin's left glove.
"We wanted to take advantage of whatever we could get," said Leitner. "One chance, one goal. That's all it takes."
Smith came back just four minutes later and threatened to increase Indiana's lead, but her shot sailed off the crossbar.
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu, making her first career start for the Hoosiers, received her first test of the game in the 32nd minute on a header from the Cardinals' Daryl Bell, but L'Hommedieu picked up her first of three saves on the night to preserve the Indiana lead.
IU sophomore Cassidy Blacha gave the Hoosiers a good look in the 66th minute as she took a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box, but it was blocked.
After Louisville outshot Indiana in the first half, 10-4, chances were much more even in the second half as the Cardinals held just a 6-5 advantage. One of those Cardinal shots connected in the 76th minute as Allison Whitfield tied the game, chipping it in past L'Hommedieu.
In the first overtime, the Hoosiers came out firing as they put up five shots in 10 minutes. Freshman Macy Miller threatened in the 93rd minute as her attempt nailed the crossbar. The best chance for the Hoosiers came from redshirt senior Marissa Borschke as she put up two straight attempts in the 99th minute – one was blocked and the other just missed the far post.
"In the overtime, I thought we pummeled the goal there for a minute," said Coach Berbary. "We just couldn't find the back of the net."
The final overtime period featured a pair of shots from both teams, with the biggest threat being from Indiana freshman Chandra Davidson, whose attempt in the 108th minute was saved by Bucklin.
Indiana returns to action on Sunday as the Hoosiers play host to Western Michigan at 1 p.m.
"We're looking forward to tweaking a couple things defensively and talk about our shape to see what we can do Sunday against a very good Western Michigan team," said Berbary.
