BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer surrendered two-second half goals as the Hoosiers fell to Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon, 2-0. Both Western Michigan goals came off the foot of junior Kendall Juhnke as the Broncos improved to 2-0-0 and Indiana dropped to 0-1-1.
Western Michigan outshot the Hoosiers, 16-9, in the contest. However, the biggest difference-maker came on corner kicks, where the Broncos held an 8-2 advantage, including seven corners to Indiana's two in the second half.
"I thought it was a tail of two halves really," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We got to halftime, 0-0. Came out in the second half a bit sluggish. We talked about our effort and just our drive. I thought we sat back a bit and needed to press more."
Six of those corners for the Broncos came in the first 11 minutes of the second half, capped by one that led to Juhnke's first goal in the 56th minute. After Maria Jaramillo served it in the box, Juhnke volleyed the ball past Indiana goalkeeper Bristal Hadley-Mautino into the center of the goal.
Juhnke added onto the Western Michigan lead in the 75th minute. After Liz Abro picked up a loose ball from a header, Juhnke buried the ball from 20 yards out into the top right of the goal.
Indiana's best scoring opportunities came in the first half as the Hoosiers put a pair of shots on frame. Sophomore Abby Allen nearly gave IU an early lead in the third minute as sophomore Cassidy Blacha served her the ball just inside the 18-yard box, but Bronco goalkeeper Stephanie Heber made a diving stop to earn her first of two saves.
Blacha got a chance of her own in the 21st minute with an on-target look at the top of the box, but Heber was there once again for the save.
Hadley-Mautino, a redshirt freshman, saw her first career action and picked up a trio of saves in the first half.
"I thought Bristal did a good job," Berbary said. "She made a couple of key saves for us. The goals that they scored, I mean, it was the same kid twice. We left her open."
Next up for Indiana, the Hoosiers will travel to Indianapolis to face Butler on Friday evening. IU will return home next Sunday to play host to Northern Colorado.
"I think this team is resilient," said Berbary. "We're not by any means happy with this result but I do think we will continue to look ahead. This hurts a little bit but we have a huge game against an in-state rival this coming Friday so we'll regroup, take tomorrow off and look forward to Butler next Friday night."
