ZIONSVILLE, Indiana – After Wolf Run Golf Club received well over an inch of rain overnight and early Saturday morning, the 14-team field at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate was able to get out and play 18 holes on Saturday.
When the dust settled, the Indiana men's golf team sat in a three-way tie for fourth place with a team score of 291, just two shots out of second place. Purdue leads the tournament after posting a first round score of 277 while Illinois and Kentucky are tied for second at 288 and UCF and North Texas are even with the Hoosiers.
Due to the rain and the delay on Saturday, the tournament has been shortened from 54-holes to 36-holes with teams concluding play on Sunday with 18 holes starting with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 tee.
Leading the way for Indiana in the first round was senior Andrew Havill, who used a birdie-par-birdie finish to his front nine to go out in 2-under 33 before posting eight pars and one bogey on the way in to finish at 1-under par (70) and a tie for sixth.
Junior Brendon Doyle's scorecard was a model of consistency, as he carded 12 consecutive pars to begin his round before finishing with one birdie and one bogey to go with four more pars and an even par round of 71, leaving him in a tie for 11th.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Brown was 1-under par through his first six holes, but played the next eight holes in 6-over par before coming in strong with birdies on two of his final four holes to log a 3-over par 74 and a tie for 25th.
Freshman Brock Ochsenreiter, playing in his first collegiate golf tournament, had four bogeys, one double bogey and one birdie on his way to a 5-over par 76 while Keegan Vea rounded out the IU lineup with an 84 in round one.
In addition to the five players competing towards the team score, Indiana also had three players competing as individuals and they were led by Matthew Weber's 74 in round one. Jack Sparrow logged an 82 and Christian Fairbanks was one shot behind him with an 83.
The Hoosiers will begin the final round on Sunday with the first tee time at 9:20 a.m. off the first tee. To follow all of the scores and get up-to-the-minute results, follow the live scoring at GolfStat.com.
