ZIONSVILLE, Indiana – The Indiana men's golf program opened the 2016-17 season with a sixth place finish at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at Wolf Run Golf Club on Sunday. Their team score of 299 in the final round gave them a 36-hole total score of 590 (+22), five shots behind UCF and North Texas, who tied for fourth.
The score of 590 is the best 36-hole team score for IU at Wolf Run since posting 568 (284-284) in 2012 on their way to a second place finish.
Due to nearly 2.5 inches of rain on Friday and Saturday, the tournament was shortened from 54-holes to a 36-hole event.
For Sunday's final round, the temperatures climbed to the mid-70s and there was hardly a cloud in the sky, but the course was not as pleasant for some teams. Just one of the 14 teams in the event was able to post a team score under par and 12 of the teams were 10-over par or worse in the final rounds.
Indiana was once again led by senior Andrew Havill, who hails from nearby Carmel, Indiana, as he carded a 2-over par 73 in his final round, giving him a score of 143 (+1) and a tie for sixth place. His fourth career Top 10 finish was a product of some steady play throughout on a course that was setup to challenge the field. He posted four bogeys and two birdies to go with 14 pars on his round.
Brendon Doyle was just two shots behind Havill over the 36 holes, posting a final round of 3-over 74 to put him in a tie for 14thwith a total score of 145. Doyle matched Havill with four bogeys and two birdies, but a double bogey on No. 15 ended up being the difference.
Another local product, Jake Brown, had a little bit of a roller coaster final round, starting with three bogeys over his first five holes before rebounding with birdies on No. 6 and No. 8. But he opened the back nine with a double bogey and a bogey before playing the final seven holes at even par. His total score of 149 was good for a tie for 29th on the individual leaderboard.
Brock Ochsenreiter, a freshman from Nashville, Tennesee, playing in his first collegiate tournament was not able to get his round started off on the right foot, as he entered the 13th hole at 8-over par. But he gathered himself and played the final six holes in 2-under par to shoot 77 in his final round. His total score of 153 put him in a tie for 45th.
And rounding out the IU team lineup with senior Keegan Vea, whose 83 in round two gave him a total score of 167 and put him in 76th individually.
The Hoosiers also had three individuals competing in the tournament, and the top score from those three game from Matthew Weber, who closed with an 80 on Sunday and tied for 49th with a score of 154. Jack Sparrow carded a 76 in his final round and earned a tie for 61st with a score of 158 while Christian Fairbanks was just behind him in a tie for 68th with a score of 161 after his final round 78.
Next up on the fall schedule for IU is a trip to Olympia Fields Country Club for the Fighting Illini Invitational, with the 54-hole event taking place Sept. 16-18.
