Hoosiers Drop Tournament Finale to FGCU

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Indiana volleyball team came back from down 0-2 to force a fifth set, but couldn't close it out as they fell in five sets (17-25, 26-28, 25-17, 25-22, 12-15) to Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday in the Homewood Suites Classic.
Senior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers (9-1) with a career-high 22 kills and posted a double-double as she added 11 digs.
"We lost a real heartbreaker tonight in five sets," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "We fought ourselves but give Florida Gulf Coast credit, they are a very good team with a great crowd. We beat them in every statistical category except serving where we gave them too many points. We are in absolute control of that and will fix it. This team cares so much and we will help them continue to learn how to win."
Middle blockers Jazzmine McDonald and Hayden Huybers combined for 20 kills with Huybers hitting .583 with nine kills and McDonald .364 with 11 kills.
Senior Taylor Lebo tallied 18 digs and three aces for the Hoosiers. With the three aces Lebo moved into eighth on the Hoosiers all-time list for career aces and now has 114.
Leading 24-21 in the second set, the Hoosiers couldn't close it out and Florida Gulf Coast (7-2) won the set, 28-26 to build a 2-0 lead in the match.
Indiana came out strong in the third set and jumped to a 9-1 lead. Florida Gulf Coast would get within four at 20-16, but the Hoosiers scored three straight points to keep the momentum and take the set, 25-17 to extend the match.
The Hoosiers led the fourth set 18-11 until the Eagles came all the way back to tie the set 21-21. Indiana kept its composure and got a kill from freshman Kendall Beerman and a FGCU attack error to go up 23-21 and take the fourth set, 25-22.
The fifth set started out very tight with neither team going up by more then one point until the Hoosiers took a 9-7 lead on an FGCU attack error. The Hoosiers would go up 10-7, but the Eagles scored three straight points to tie the set, 10-10.
With the score 11-11 FGCU got a kill and an Indiana attack error to go up 13-11. Sophomore Elizabeth Asdell kept the Hoosiers in the match with a kill to make it 13-12, but the Eagles scored the final two points to win the match, the last point as an Indiana attack sailed long.
Up next Indiana will host the Hoosier Classic Sept. 16-17 with matches against Arkansas State, IUPUI and Cleveland State.
