BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana volleyball team dug itself an 0-2 hole and could not comeback as they fell in four sets (18-25, 20-25, 27-25, 21-25) on Friday night in their first match of the Hoosier Classic.
Senior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers with 18 kills and with her 17 digs, senior Taylor Lebo reached 900 career digs.
Senior setter Megan Tallman posted a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs.
After going down 0-2 in the match the Hoosiers (9-2) found themselves facing a 23-17 deficit in the third set.
Undeterred, Indiana fought back and used a 7-1 run, capped off by an ace from sophomore Samantha Fogg to even the set 24-24.
Arkansas State got a quick kill to respond but then committed an attack error and the score again was knotted, 25-25.
Hammond and sophomore Elizabeth Asdell connected on swings and the Hoosiers completed the third set comeback to extend the match.
The Hoosiers again trailed throughout the fourth set as they went down 17-9. The team continued to battle and worked it all the way back to down one at 21-20.
The Red Wolves converted an attack for a kill and then some miscommunication by Indiana led to an ace for Arkansas State to put them up 23-20. The Hoosiers got a kill from junior Jessica Leish, but that was their last point of the match as Arkansas State put it away with a kill to seal the win.
Indiana will continue play in the Hoosier Classic with two matches tomorrow. First the Hoosiers will take on IUPUI at 12:00 p.m. and later battle Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m.
