Hoosiers Host Indiana Intercollegiate Meet
9/15/2016 12:45:00 PM | Cross Country
The Hoosiers host the annual Indiana Intercollegiate Cross Country meet on Friday. The women's open 5k race will begin at 3:00PM followed by the men's open 8k at 3:30PM. The women's championship 5k will begin at 4:40PM and the meet will be concluded with the men's 8k championship at 5:15PM.
In total there will be 21 teams competing in the race including Division I opponents Ball State, Evansville, Indiana State, IUPUI and Purdue.
The women's team looks to defend their team championship from a season ago in this meet. In fact, the Hoosier women have won the Intercollegiate seven years in a row dating back to 2009. Haley Harris won the race and helped pace the IU perfect score. Maggie Allen crossed third and Amanda Behnke rounded out the scoring with a fifth place finish.
The men's team will look to improve on their third place finish last season, which snapped the team's three year winning streak. Jason Crist was the top returning finisher crossing in tenth.
This meet will mark the second of the season for Indiana, the first being the Indiana Open. The Hoosiers took care of business against Miami of Ohio. The women's team finished with 19 points and were led by top finisher Brenna Calder. Running unattached, Hannah Stoffel and Katherine Free both ran top five times. Both Stoffel and Free will make their official Indiana debut this weekend.
Katherine Receveur, who figures to battle for a spot in Indiana's top five runners, will make her season debut in the Championship race.
The men's team dominated the dual by sweeping the top six positions. Crist was impressive in the season's opening race by crossing the line more than 10 seconds faster than any other competitor. Rounding out the top five were: Bryce Millar, Mark Chandler, Jeremy Coughler and Matt Schwartzer.
Highly touted freshman Ben Veatch will likely make his Indiana debut on Friday. Kyle Mau, a redshirt freshman will also make his team debut. Both will hope to make an impact on an already deep men's lineup.
