OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – While Sunday's final round didn't produce the finish that the Indiana men's golf team was looking for, it did provide another result that may pay dividends down the road as they competed with one of the top fields in collegiate golf.
The Hoosiers final round score of 297 put their 54-hole total score at 885 (+45) and sole possession of 14th place. While they dropped four spots from their starting position entering Sunday, they were just four shots behind 10th place and 12 shots from seventh place.
"This was perhaps the best field in college golf," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "We were competitive and went toe-to-toe with all of them, but Came up a little short. I thought we played well, but in a field like this, playing well doesn't always get you the finish you want. We found out a lot about ourselves this week and are excited to carry that over into our next tournament."
Andrew Havill finished in a tie for 19th place to pace the Hoosiers with a total score of 216 (73-70-73; +6) after a final round 70. After entering the day tied for fifth in total birdies, he was only able to register one on the day to give him 10 for the tournament – the ninth-most in the field. Havill also tied for fifth in par 5 scoring, playing the longer holes in 2-under par over the three rounds.
Just one shot behind Havill was Brendon Doyle in 21st place with a score of 217 (72-74-71; +7). He got off to a blazing start, recording three birdies over his first seven holes to get to 3-under on the day. But he would post four bogeys and seven pars to finish the day 1-over on the round. Doyle made up ground on the field on the par 3's this week, finishing 1-under on the holes to join eight others in the field of 78 that were under par on the par 3's.
Freshman Brock Ochsenreiter wrapped up his second collegiate tournament with a 5-over par 75 on Sunday. His total score of 223 (74-74-75; +13) put him in a tie for 42nd and third amongst the five Hoosiers. Ochsenreiter's final round saw him record five bogeys and 13 pars, increasing his par total for the week to 35, which ranked among the top 25 in the field in that category.
The fourth score that counted on Sunday was Jake Brown's 78, as he finished the tournament with a score of 229 (77-74-78; +19) and a tie for 60th. After playing his first five holes in 1-under par, a double bogey on his sixth hole derailed his round and he went on to play the final 13 holes in 9-over par.
Matthew Weber closed out his tournament in 78th place after a final round score of 88 put his overall score at 245 (80-77-88; +35).
Jack Sparrow, who was competing as an individual, posted a score of 84 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 76th with a score of 240 (80-76-84; +30).
Indiana returns to the links next week for the Windon Memorial, which will be played at North Shore Country Club near Chicago on Sept. 25-26 and is hosted by Northwestern University.
