No. 3 Hoosiers Draw with Northwestern, 0-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 3-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team played the Northwestern Wildcats to a draw, 0-0, on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With the draw, Indiana moves to 4-0-3 on the season overall and to 1-0-2 in Big Ten play. Northwestern improves to 1-5-1 on the season and to 0-2-1 in league action. IU remains undefeated through the team's first seven matches for the 11th time in school history and for the first time since 2011.
IU goalkeeper Colin Webb posted his fourth shutout of the season, making one saves. Webb has now recorded 24 shutouts in his career, moving him in to ninth place all-time in school history.
For the match, IU out-shot Northwestern, 28-3, getting six shots on goal to just one for the Wildcats. Tanner Thompson led the team with six shots, while Andrew Gutman had five, getting two on-frame. The 28 shots for the Hoosiers are the most this season and the most since Indiana had 33 shots against Ohio State on Sept. 29, 2013.
In a scoreless first half, the Hoosiers dominated possession but were unable to get on the scoreboard. In the first 45 minutes, Indiana out-shot Northwestern, 9-2, with IU getting three shots on goal to just one for the Wildcats.
The Hoosiers looked like they had earned a penalty kick in the 17th minute when Andrew Gutman was taken down by a NU foul. IU asked for the PK, but the ref deemed the foul to have occurred just outside the 18-yard box. Indiana was unable to get a score on the ensuing free kick.
In the second half, IU continued to control the match, out-shooting the Wildcats an amazing 17-0 in the frame. The Hoosiers had three shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
In the overtime sessions, Northwestern continued to play very deep defensively, allowing IU to take a pair of shots to just one for NU.
With the draw, Indiana has posted a record of 26-2-7 against Northwestern in the 35 matches in the series. IU is now 2-0-4 against the Wildcats in the last six meetings.
The No. 3 Hoosiers will have just one day to get ready for in-state rival IUPUI on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Kickoff at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET.
