Brown’s OT Goal Lifts Indiana Past Illinois, 1-0

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Indiana Women's Soccer's lone shot on goal at Illinois proved to be enough as the Hoosiers defeated the Illini in overtime on Sunday, 1-0. Redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown picked up her fourth goal of the year as she scored in the 92nd minute to give Indiana its first Big Ten win of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu came up big again and again for the Hoosiers (4-5-1, 1-1-0 Big Ten) on Sunday, making five saves to earn her third shutout of the season and fourth victory.
"Illinois is a very, very good team who threatened on goal quite a bit," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "I thought our backs and L'Hommedieu did a fantastic job. We ask our goalkeepers to come up with one or two saves a half and she really bailed us out in the second half. I'm proud of our kids fight, that's the way all of these games are going to be."
Neither team could get much going offensively to start the game as IU and Illinois both had just one shot through the first 22 minutes of action. Indiana looked to jumpstart the offense midway into the first half as the Hoosiers were able to earn a pair of corners, but shots by sophomore Maya Piper and freshman Macy Miller were off target.
Illinois' Hope D'Addario gave the first scare of the game as she sent in a ball in the 33rd minute that just went over the crossbar.
Right before half, the Illini (3-6-0, 0-2-0 Big Ten) put up the first shots on target of the day to test L'Hommedieu. After a tipped save off a shot by Caroline Ratz, the Hudson, Ohio native earned her second stop of the game by diving on a ball headed by Lauren Ciesla.
Illinois came out of halftime aggressively, earning four corner kicks in the first eight minutes, all of which were cleared by the Hoosiers.
One of L'Hommedieu's biggest stops of the day came in the 53rd minute of play as Summer Schafer challenged her on a breakaway. L'Hommedieu dove to her left to push the ball out of play to preserve the stalemate.
On the other end of the field, the Hoosiers were unable to get solid looks, as the only shots of the second half came on a blocked shot from Piper and a high attempt from sophomore Caroline Dreher.
Illinois continued to knock on the door as the Illini fired 10 of their 16 total shots in the second half, including a ball from D'Addario off a corner that was just tipped by L'Hommedieu in the 74th minute.
Six minutes later, D'Addario delivered another dangerous look after the Hoosiers were whistled for a foul just outside the 18-yard box, resulting in a free kick. The Illini received another free kick in the 88th minute, however both shots by D'Addario were off target to send the game into overtime.
The gamewinner for Brown came at the 91:37 mark after a Hoosier throw in was sent back to freshman Meghan Scott, who served the ball into the box. Illinois goalkeeper Michelle Denley came out to defend the cross, but pushed it out to Brown, who punched it in from just inside the six-yard box to give Indiana the victory.
"We were able to make it somehow to overtime at 0-0," said Berbary. "We talked about giving full effort and getting that one look and taking that one look if we are able to get it and put it away."
Next up, the Hoosiers return to Armstrong Stadium on Friday night to play host to Minnesota (7-2-1, 1-0-1 Big Ten). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
