Hoosier Notes:
Big Weekend in the Buckeye State
After splitting results on the first weekend of the season, the Indiana Hoosiers are ancious to see who will step up and rise to the challenge at this weekend's Buckeye Invitational. Indiana will begin with No. 7 Wake Forest, who will provide an adequate litmus test after opening their season versus three Big Ten contenders. Following that, the Hoosiers will meet with their only west coast opponent of the 2016 season, the UC Davis Aggies.
Opening Observations
The 2016 field hockey season kicked off across the country last weekend, and Indiana was no exception. They began with a 5-1 loss at home versus No. 12 Louisville, with Sam Scire sending home the 1-1 tying goal early in the first half.
That Sunday, senior Kate Barber lifted IU to a 3-2 overtime win at Ohio. Trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes, Barber halved the deficit with a penalty corner straight shot before halftime. Barber's tying straight shot with 30 seconds remaining forced overtime, and Barber landed a solo strike within the first 30 seconds for the sudden victory.
Early Examination
Indiana will meet their second top-15 team in as many weeks when they line up against No. 7 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon. The Hoosiers seek their first program win against the Demon Deacons, who have taken the previous seven meetings. Wake Forest is off to a 1-1 start this year, dropping their home opener against Iowa before collecting a shutout win over No. 10 Michigan.
The game versus Wake Forest will be their second of four out-of-conference contests against the ACC.
Anticipating the Aggies
The Hoosiers will have less than 24 hours to turn around from their game against Wake Forest when they take on the UC Davis Aggies on Labor Day. Indiana has won all three previous meetings versus UC Davis, most recently with a 5-1 victory at home in 2014. The Aggies began their season with a home loss against Northeastern. They'll face a common opponent, the Ohio Bobcats, before playing the Hoosiers on Monday.
Of Note…
• Kate Barber, Morgan Dye, and Noëlle Rother were named to the 2016 Big Ten Players to Watch List.
• Junior Maddie Latino was Indiana's top scorer last year, and she'll aim to build off of that success in the 2016 season. Latino leads the Hoosiers' assist tally after two games, notching two at Ohio.
• A pair of Hoosiers, senior Malia Fujisawa and freshman Andi Jackson, face a visit from their hometown university on Monday versus UC Davis. The two hail from Davis, California, and attended Davis Senior High School before arriving at Indiana.
• 2015 All-American Kate Barber returns to Indiana as a key playmaker in her senior season. Barber answered the bell with her first career hat trick in IU's win over Ohio, which included two penalty corner scores.
• This weekend's invitational is Morgan Dye's final opportunity to play collegiate field hockey in front of her hometown crowd. The senior from nearby Powell, Ohio will receive a warm welcome from friends and family during IU's games at Ohio State.
