SAN FRANCISCO – The Indiana volleyball team survived a tough test against Campbell, but prevailed with a five set victory (23-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 15-10).
The Hoosiers (4-0) received significant contributions from a variety of places. Redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman and junior Jessica Leish each set career-highs in kills as Beerman posted 19 and Leish added 13.
Senior Megan Tallman became the seventh player in school history to reach 3,000 career assists. Tallman dished out 54 for the match and added eight digs, six kills and three aces.
Freshman Deyshia Lofton played with confidence throughout the match and finished with nine kills and one error for a .667 hitting efficiency. Lofton also tallied five blocks and three aces.
Senior Taylor Lebo (20 digs) anchored a defense that saw the Hoosiers throwing their bodies across the court, coming up with one handed digs and making tough plays throughout the match. Every player in the match (10) had at least one dig for the Hoosiers.
With Campbell leading the match 2-1 the Hoosiers faced a must win scenario in the fourth set. In a set which had 16 ties and six lead changes, the Hoosiers didn't lead by more then three points until pulling ahead 21-18 on an attack error by Campbell.
Campbell came back to within one at 24-23, but Leish put it away with a kill to force a fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set started out with the teams trading multiple service errors before Lebo sent a ball skyrocketing over the net for an ace to put the Hoosiers up 4-2. A few points later IU continued their momentum with another ace, this time Tallman to put the Hoosiers up 8-5.
Campbell would pull to within 12-10, but that is the closest they would get the rest of the way. Freshman Meaghan Koors sealed the match for the Hoosiers with an ace on match point to give Indiana the victory.
With the win, IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan reached her 250th career win.
Up next the Hoosiers take on tournament host San Francisco at 9:30 p.m. ET.
