Hoosiers Open Big Ten Play with Win over Wildcats
9/21/2016 10:37:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Hayden Huybers played like a veteran on the attack with a perfect 10 for 10 on kills with no errors to help the Hoosiers win their Big Ten opener, 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 25-27, 25-20) over Northwestern on Wednesday night at University Gym.
Senior Megan Tallman, who led the Hoosiers (12-2, 1-0) in kills after the first set, stuffed the stat sheet with 46 assists, a career-high eight kills, eight digs and three aces.
The Hoosiers led Northwestern (7-6, 0-1) 2-0 going into the third set, but the Wildcats mounted a comeback by hitting .393 and won the set to force the match into a fourth set.
In the fourth set the Hoosiers got kills from six different players and hit their best percentage of any individual set at .440. Despite the efficient offensive attack, Northwestern kept it close with the set knotted 11-11.
Back-to-back kills by Huybers and redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman gave Indiana a little breathing room with a 13-11 advantage and the Hoosiers would increase that lead to 17-13 on another kill from Huybers.
In all the Hoosiers collected 14 kills and three errors on 25 attempts in the fourth set and sealed the match with a 25-20 set victory.
Up next the Hoosiers will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., where they will take on rival Purdue on Saturday Sept. 24 in Mackey Arena.
