Hoosiers Start Season Strong

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers opened up the 2016 cross country season by defeating Miami (OH) in both the men's and women's races. The weather was picture perfect for the morning races. Brenna Calder crossed first in the women's race and Jason Crist won the men's race.
The first race of the day was the women's 5k. IU took 10 of the top 12 spots in the race and won with a score of 19 points. Calder clocked in at 18:23.05. Maggie Allen finished fourth, Haley Harris took sixth, Corrine Cominator placed 10th and Chanli Mundy ran 11th.
The Hoosiers ran all freshmen unattached. Hannah Stoffel was the runner-up with a time of 18:25.76. Katherine Free placed fifth, Grace Walther came in seventh, Lexa Barrott crossed in ninth and Stacy Morozov took 12th.
In the men's race, Crist finished the 8k in 26:06.71. He led the 15-point sweep for the Hoosiers as they took the first six spots and eight of the top 10 positions. Bryce Millar crossed second, Mark Chandler was third, Jeremy Coughler finished fourth and Matt Schwartzer came in fifth.
The other top 10 finishers were Kyle Burks (sixth), Jackson Bertoli (eighth) and Joe Murphy (10th). The top unattached finishers were Teddy Browning, Cooper Williams and Cameron Clements.
The Hoosiers will take to the course next on Sept. 16 with the Indiana Intercollegiate meet. The meet will be in Bloomington this year.
