9/30/2016 10:24:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers stayed with No. 2 Minnesota through the early part of every set, but the Golden Gophers pulled away to capture a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-15, 25-17) Friday at University Gym.
Senior Allison Hammond led the Hoosiers (12-4, 1-2) with nine kills, senior Megan Tallman posted 23 assists and sophomore Samantha Fogg led the Hoosiers with seven digs.
The Hoosiers never trailed by more then two points in the first set until Minnesota (11-1, 3-0) opened up an 11-8 lead. The Golden Gophers scored seven of the next 10 points to build an 18-11 lead and won the first set, 25-17.
The second set started in a similar way with Hoosiers holding leads of 2-1, 3-2, 4-3, 6-5 and 7-6. With Indiana up 7-6, the Golden Gophers used a 5-0 scoring run to go up 11-7. The Hoosiers fought back with three straight points on a kill from redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman and back-to-back kills by senior Jazzmine McDonald to cut the Minnesota lead to 11-10.
Minnesota again used a big scoring run, this time 7-1 to go up 18-11 and win the second set, 25-15.
The final set of the match featured six ties as the Hoosiers kept with Minnesota deeper into the set, scoring their 14th point on a kill from Hammond to cut the Minnesota lead to 16-14.
The Hoosiers again came within two at 17-15 on a kill from sophomore Jessica Admire, who had three kills on eight attempts with no errors in the match.
The two point deficit at 17-15 was the closest the Hoosiers would come for the rest of the set as Minnesota closed the third set with a 8-2 run to win the set, 25-17 and take the match in three sets.
Up next the Hoosiers host No. 3 Wisconsin tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. ET.
