BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer fell to SMU on Monday's final game of the Hoosier Challenge Cup, 2-1. The Mustangs' gamewinner came late as Blair Thorpe scored in the 77th minute to break the stalemate.
Indiana (2-3-1) jumped up early as senior Veronica Ellis netted her first goal of the season in the 11th minute. After Ellis took the throw in, sophomore Abby Allen sent the ball back to her and Ellis punched it in from just left of the 18-yard box. Mustang goalkeeper Catie Brown got her hands on the ball, but it slipped past her and into the goal. The assist was Allen's first career point.
SMU (3-1-0) found the equalizer before halftime as Haley Thompson took a free kick from 40 yards out to set up Claire Oates' header inside the far post in the 39th minute of action.
Shots between the teams were even at 15 apiece, however the Mustangs held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.
"We had good individual performances today," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "But we've got to work better as a team on finishing games, especially when we're up one-nil."
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu made five saves on the day, including a diving stop on a one-on-one breakaway opportunity for Thorpe in the 64th minute to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Two minutes later, IU sophomore Hanna Johnson gave the Hoosiers one of its best looks of the game as she sent a diving header off the post.
SMU's Thorpe did cash in on another breakaway opportunity as she lofted the ball from 20 yards out above L'Hommedieu to give the Mustangs the 2-1 lead with just 13 minutes left to go in the game.
Eight IU freshmen saw time on the field, including Chandra Davidson who put up an on-target header from close range in the 81st minute, but it was collected by Brown to keep the SMU lead intact.
Up next, the Hoosiers hit the road for four consecutive games, starting with a trip to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Invitational. IU will play the Hokies on Friday night and face JMU on Sunday.
"We need to work on the things we didn't do so well today," said Ellis. "Try not to make those some mistakes and continue to do the things that we did do well, well."
