Thoughts from Head Coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan
On going to San Francisco
"It was a lot of fun. We had a great time. We got there early on Thursday and toured a little bit. We took the kids to Alcatraz. We tried to give them the experience of going out there and not just playing volleyball. I think that is part of being a student-athlete here at Indiana."
On FGCU Invitational
"Florida Gulf Coast is an RPI team. They are a NCAA perennial team. Even though people don't hear about them a lot, they are funded very well for their volleyball program. South Alabama is 5-1 and off to one of their best starts in school history. This will be a challenging tournament for us."
On the play of the team through seven matches
"In my 10 years here, I think one of the things we have improved on is our offense and hitting efficiency. We are fifth in the nation right now in hitting percentage. The counter part of that, we are allowing teams to hit at too high of a percentage against us, so we are focusing more on our defense now. I'm happy with our offense and the speed and pace, now we have to slow down other teams."
Off to a Fast Start
For the second time in three years the Hoosiers won their first six matches of the season. The 7-0 start is the sixth time in program history an Indiana volleyball team has started 7-0. The last time was in 2010 when the Hoosiers went an undefeated 12-0 in non-conference play.
Fresh Faces Impress
The Indiana freshmen class (ranked No. 29 in the country going into the season) has made an impact in their short time at Indiana. Redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman is leading the Hoosiers in kills with 85 and is tops among freshmen in the Big Ten in hitting percentage at .390. Freshman Deyshia Lofton posted nine kills (.667 hitting percentage), three aces and five blocks in win over Campbell. In her first collegiate start, freshman Hayden Huybers tallied three kills on five swings with no errors and two aces. In all seven players that did not play in the 2015 season have played this year for the Hoosiers.
Hitting it Lights Out
The Hoosiers are currently fifth in the country in hitting percentage (.325) and have hit over .400 in three matches this season. Against Princeton the Hoosiers hit .500, the third best in program history for a three-set match. The Hoosiers have five players on their roster hitting over .300, who have recorded at least 1.60 kills/set.
