BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head coach Ramiro Azcui knew the Hoosiers first tennis match of the dual season was going to be emotional. The match against Western Michigan featured a matchup against Azcui's daughter, Denise, who plays for Western Michigan.
Azcui was proud of the way his team competed as the Indiana women's tennis team captured a 7-0 victory against Western Michigan and followed that up with a 7-0 win against Butler.
The Hoosiers (2-0) faced some adversity to open the doubles match against Western Michigan. With each team winning one of the three matches it all came down to the No. 1 doubles match. Senior Kim Schmider and sophomore Madison Appel trailed 5-3, but were able to overcome the slow start to storm back and win the match in a tiebreak to put Indiana up 1-0 in the match.
Indiana carried that momentum from doubles into singles, where they won all six first sets. Caitlin Bernard and Appel put Indiana up 3-0 in the match and Natalie Whalen clinched it with a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 4 spot. Indiana went on to win all six singles match to win the overall match 7-0.
"I thought we competed really well today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "We still have some things to work on, but I thought our energy was really good throughout both matches."
Against Butler the Hoosiers were in control in doubles as they captured victories in each of the three doubles matches.
Although Indiana played some close sets in singles each of their six players won in straight sets to secure the 7-0 win against the Bulldogs.
Up next the Hoosiers welcome Washington State and Cincinnati on Jan. 29. Indiana takes on Washington State at 9:30 a.m. and matches up with Cincinnati at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the IU Tennis Center.
