Hoosiers Split Weekend Matches

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 match against Washington State to open the day, but came back to top Cincinnati 5-2 in the afternoon match on Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.
"I think we responded really well after the first match," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "We had better energy and more confidence against Cincinnati and we embraced the challenge really well."
Indiana 5, Cincinnati 1
The Hoosiers set the tone for the match early with strong play in doubles. Out of the three matches Indiana lost two games. Sophomores Caitlin Bernard and Natalie Whalen got it started with a 6-0 victory and the teams of sophomore Madison Appel and senior Kim Schmider and senior Paula Gutierrez and freshman Pauline Jahren followed it up with 6-1 victories.
Bernard gave the Hoosiers (3-1) a second point with a 6-2, 6-0 win in a match that lasted under an hour. Whalen put IU up 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the number four position and Alicia Robinson clinched the match for Indiana with a 6-4, 6-3 win at six singles. Madison Appel added a fifth point for the Hoosiers with a 6-3, 6-4 win
Washington State 4, Indiana 0
The Hoosiers fell behind early but fought back in doubles. The number one doubles team of senior Kim Schmider and sophomore Madison Appel went down 2-0, but rallied back to win two of the next games to take a 4-3 lead. That match was not finished with Washington State winning the other two doubles matches.
In singles the Hoosiers kept it close throughout the matches, but couldn't find a victory. Sophomore Caitlin Bernard won her first set and after Appel dropped her first set she came back to take a 5-4 lead before her match was stopped. Schmider lost in a tiebreak in her first set and at the point they were set to start the second set the match was ended.
