Martin builds momentum with second Big Ten win
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana wrestling team returned to University Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, hosting a dual meet with No. 5 Nebraska. The Huskers (12-1, 6-1) pulled away in the second half of the bout card for a 31-15 win. The Hoosiers fall to 8-6 on the season with a 1-4 record in Big Ten dual meets.
The abridged dual saw three results without incident. Indiana's #17 Devin Skatzka (174) and #6 Nate Jackson (184) won by forfeit; for Nebraska, #4 Eric Montoya (133) closed the dual with another win by forfeit.
Beyond the dual points from forfeits, the Hoosiers picked up a decision victory from Bryce Martin (165) over Dustin Williams. Martin (13-5) scored his second Big Ten dual win of the season in dramatic fashion, notching a go-ahead takedown with seven seconds remaining in the match.
Williams broke a scoreless tie in the second period with a quick escape and a takedown, but Martin broke free with short time to make it 3-1 entering the final period. Martin started the third with an escape and, after a solid defensive display, scored the match-winning takedown before the buzzer.
In the second match of the afternoon, Chris Perez (149) dropped a close 3-2 decision to Collin Purinton for his first Big Ten dual loss of the season. Perez broke out in the second period to tie the match, nearly scoring a takedown for the lead. But after further review, officials overturned the takedown call. Purinton scored the decisive riding time point in the third period.
