Middle weights spark 19-point run

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Indiana wrestling team began their weekend on the east coast with a Friday night dual meet against the Maryland Terrapins at the XFINITY Center Pavilion. The Hoosiers (9-6, 2-4) won 6-of-10 bouts to earn a 22-19 victory over the Terrapins (2-12, 0-7).

Three Hoosiers picked up bonus points in their matches. Jake Danishek (157) and Devin Skatzka (174) each won by major decision amidst Indiana's decisive 19-point swing. Nate Jackson (184) notched career win No. 97 with a five-minute technical fall to remain unbeaten in dual meets this season.

The meet began with a rematch from last year's dual at 125 lbs., Elijah Oliver against Michael Beck. Oliver's first period takedown proved decisive in a 3-2 decision victory.

Maryland stretched out a 9-3 dual lead in the next two matches, forcing a pivotal matchup between Chris Perez (149) and Adam Whitesell. Perez held a 2-1 margin entering the final period, and a quick escape pushed him to a two-point cushion. Whitesell closed the gap with a takedown and held on to force sudden victory.

Perez scored the takedown for a 5-3 sudden victory. It lifted Perez's Big Ten dual record to 5-1, and sparked a five-bout stretch of Indiana wins.

Danishek followed in the next bout with his fifth major decision of the season, a 10-1 win over Danny Boychuck. The scoreboard was blank after five minutes of wrestling, but Danishek poured on two takedowns, four back points, an escape, and a riding time point in the final two minutes.

Bryce Martin (165) kept the run going with his second consecutive dual win, 5-3, against Josh Ugalde. Martin utilized three stall points and a third period takedown to ward off Ugalde's riding time advantage. Skatzka followed that act with a thorough 16-4 major decision win, picking up nine points in the final period.

Jackson added win No. 97 to his career record in dominating fashion with a 23-8 technical fall in just over five minutes. His first period went according to plan, scoring three takedowns with a ride-out to the buzzer. Jackson picked up in the second with four more takedowns and two back points, and closed the bout with four nearfall points and a takedown early in the third period.

Indiana wins their second Big Ten dual meet, with both wins coming away from Bloomington. They are now 5-2 in opponents' gymnasiums this season.

The Hoosiers will wrap up the east coast weekend with a trip to the Garden State, facing off in a Sunday dual meet with No. 13 Rutgers. The meet will be just the fourth between the Hoosiers and Scarlet Knights in the all-time series, with Rutgers holding a 2-1 lead.

Several tantalizing rematches appear on the probable bout card. Perez could meet Ken Theobold for their rubber match, as the grapplers split a pair of decisions in 2015. Skatzka could face Phil Bakuckas, a rematch from the 2015 Midlands Championships.

Another anticipated match, although not a rematch, is the 184 lbs. bout between No. 6 Nate Jackson and No. 12 Nick Gravina. The match will have significant seeding implications on the upcoming Big Ten Championships.
