1/6/2017 2:53:00 PM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second consecutive season the Indiana Hoosier track and field team will host the Tennessee Volunteers. Both the men's and women's UT teams finished inside the top 10 in the NCAA Indoor National Championships. A long standing rivalry in the 1980's and 90's, the teams will square off at Gladstein Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Tennessee leads the all-time series 14-7 on the men's side and 9-2-1 on the women's side.
Each event will be scored. First place will register five points, second will receive three points and the third place finisher will be awarded one point. The winning relay squad will secure five points.
The meet will begin promptly at noon with a trio of women's field events. The long jump, pole vault and weight throw will get the meet started. The first running event will be the women's 60m Hurdle finals also starting at noon. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400m relay at approximately 2:40 p.m.
Last season the Hoosier men took down the Volunteers by a score of 66-47. The men's team won seven events, including sweeps in the 60m hurdles, 800m run and the mile run. The women's team ended in a tie, 61-61. The women's team also took first in seven events while sweeping the 800m run, the mile run and the 3,000m run.
Several meet records were broken last year at the dual. Christian Coleman, a Volunteer, broke the 200m dash record and was a member of the record-breaking 4-400m relay team. Cameron Brown, a Tennessee thrower, broke the weight throw record. IU's Daniel Kuhn broke the 800m run record with a blistering time of 1:49.63. Kuhn will make his 2017 season debut tomorrow as he runs in the 400m dash.
Felicia Brown and Felicia Majors broke the 200m dash and 400m dash records respectively for the Tennessee women's team. Nakel McClinton owns the meet's best mark in the weight throw. Sydney Clute cleared 4.07m in the pole vault to establish the meet record.
For IU, this is the second home meet of the young indoor track and field season. In the Hoosier Open three school records were set.
Katherine Receveur shattered the 5k school record previously held by Michelle Dekkers. Her time of 15:50.30 was nearly seven seconds quicker than Dekkers' time, the record stood for 27 years.
Brenna Calder cruised to a victory in the 1k race, topping the previous school record. Her time of 2:46.48 outpaced the previous record by about two seconds. Olivia Hippensteel placed second in the event with a time of 2:48.45, which also bested the previous school record.
Willie Morrison started his sophomore season with a bang. On his second throw of the evening, Morrison launched the shot 19.47m (63 feet 10.5 inches) to bring home the school record. The previous mark was held by Nathan Dais and stood for 20 seasons. David Schall climbed his way into the top 10 with a throw of 18.41m (60ft. 5in.), good for sixth on the all-time Hoosier Indoor list.
