Toye’s Golden Goal Leads No. 1 Hoosiers over Wisconsin, 2-1, in Double Overtime

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated Big Ten rival Wisconsin, 2-1, in double overtime on Saturday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 13-0-3 on the season overall and to 5-0-2 in Big Ten conference play. Wisconsin falls to 7-4-3 on the year and to 3-3-1 in conference action.
Indiana is unbeaten through the team's first 16 matches for the fifth time in school history and for the first time since 1997. With the victory, IU has clinched a top-four spot in the conference and will host a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match in Bloomington on Nov. 5.
Freshman Mason Toye scored the match-winner for the Hoosiers in the 109th minute, while classmate Griffin Dorsey netted a goal in the second minute for IU. Toye's goal was his team-leading ninth of the season.
In goal, freshman keeper Trey Muse and the Hoosier defense saw the team's school-record, nine-match shutout streak come to an end in the victory. Despite surrendering the goal, Muse was excellent in the match, making four saves.
Muse's consecutive scoreless-minute streak reached an incredible 966:28 minutes, ranking as the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history.
Just 80 seconds into the match, the Hoosiers grabbed the lead over the Badgers. After a foul on Wisconsin, IU had a free kick in their own half. Timmy Mehl sent a long ball looking for Dorsey, and after a Badger misplay, the freshman had a breakaway.
Dorsey's first shot from 12 yards was saved, but he calmly collected the rebound and scored, giving IU the 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season.
In the second half, the match was fairly even, with both teams getting chances at goal. Wisconsin was able to find the equalizer in the 77th minute, as Tom Barlow netted a header to even the match at 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime session, the match headed to a final 10-minute session. With just 1:05 minutes left in the match, Wisconsin was called for a foul, giving the Hoosiers a free kick from 25-yards out on the left side of the 18-yard box.
Toye stepped up to take the quick and delivered a strike to the top-left corner of the goal, beating the Wisconsin goalkeeper, who was able to just get his fingertips to the ball. The freshman's golazo gave Indiana a 2-1 victory over the Badgers, keeping IU in the thick of the Big Ten title hunt.
The Hoosiers are tied for the lead in the Big Ten with both No. 2 Maryland and No. 8 Michigan State with 17 points each with conference records of 5-0-2. IU will face Michigan State on Sunday, while the Terrapins will host Michigan, who is currently seeded fourth.
For the match, Indiana out-shot Wisconsin, 23-11, getting 12 shots on-goal to five for the Badgers. Corner kicks were 11-5 in favor of IU.
The No. 1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will head to East Lansing, Mich. to face the No. 8-ranked Michigan State Spartans on Sunday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET and the match will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
