COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A fast start for Indiana became a painful finish in Saturday's 42-39 loss at Maryland.
The Hoosiers (3-5) lost their third straight game, getting outscored 14-6 in the fourth quarter.
IU lost despite having a big advantage in total yards (483-375) and time of possession (36 minutes to 23). It also was an impressive 11-for-23 on converting third downs.
A series of injuries on offense and defense has tested the depth in ways coach Tom Allen had hoped to avoid. Tailback Morgan Ellison and defensive standouts Marcelino Ball and A'Shon Riggins were among the sidelined players on Saturday.
Quarterback Richard Lagow came in for an injured Peyton Ramsey, and threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a big one in the fourth quarter to give IU a chance, but couldn't deliver a score in the final two series.
He finished 12-for-21 for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Ramsey was 31-for-41 for 279 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
True freshman receiver Whop Philyor had a career game with 13 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown. Luke Timian also had 13 catches, for 91 yards and a touchdown. Simmie Cobbs Jr. had 10 catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
Maryland quarterback Max Bortenschlager was 10-for-16 for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
IU rocked Maryland with a first-quarter to remember.
Defensive end Allen Stallings IV delivered a safety. Defensive back Tony Fields produced an interception, the Hoosiers' second of the season. Ramsey threw for two touchdowns. Tailback Cole Gest had a 23-yard TD catch.
The strategy was simple – short passes to get Ramsey in rhythm and let the receivers make plays. He made it work by hitting 12 of his first 14 passes for 110 yards and those two touchdowns.
On the opening possession Ramsey hit Cobbs with a 34-yard touchdown pass.
Seconds later, Fields excited the Hoosiers with an interception.
IU capitalized when Ramsey checked down and got the ball to Gest, who ran 23 yards for the touchdown, breaking a tackle in the process.
The Hoosiers led 14-0 and were in total control. Then Ramsey forced a throw, Maryland intercepted and quickly scored to cut the lead in half.
The Indiana defense came through again when Stallings tackled Terrapins running back Ty Johnson in the end zone to make it 16-7. Hoosiers were again in control.
Maryland blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown to cut its deficit to 16-14.
Despite totally dominating the game, the Hoosiers were in a cliffhanger.
Indiana got a 23-yard TD pass from Ramsey to Timian. Maryland countered with a Bortenschlager scoring pass to keep the lead at two.
The Terrapins got another Bortenschlager touchdown pass just before halftime for a 28-23 lead.
In the first half Indiana ran more than twice as many plays (54-22) and had more than twice the possession time (20 minutes to 9), plus 103 more total yards.
Ramsey was knocked out of the game early in the third quarter. Lagow came in for an 11-yard TD pass to Philyor for a 30-28 lead.
Ramsey returned for the next series. Consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties on Maryland led to a Griffin Oakes field goal and a 33-28 lead.
The Terrapins responded with two touchdowns for a 42-33 lead. Lagow came in for an injured Ramsey and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Cobbs to make it 42-39. The extra point was blocked.
IU had two chances in the closing minutes, the last one starting at its own 1-yard line with two minutes left.
Maryland's defense stiffened en route to the victory.
Indiana returns to Memorial Stadium next weekend to face No. 5 Wisconsin.
