No. 1 Indiana Posts Sixth-Straight Shutout in 1-0 Win at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions, 1-0, at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa. on Saturday night.
With the victory, Indiana improves to 10-0-2 on the season overall and to 3-0-2 in Big Ten conference play. Penn State falls to 2-7-2 on the year and to 0-5 in league action. IU is undefeated through the team's first 12 matches for the first time since 1997 and for the sixth time in program history.
With the 1-0 victory, Indiana set a program record with the team's sixth-straight shutout. The Hoosiers have not allowed a goal since a 1-1 draw at No. 18 Michigan – 599:37 minutes of play. The shutout is the team's NCAA-leading 10th of the season.
Redshirt freshman Spencer Glass made the most of his first collegiate goal, scoring the match-winner for the Hoosiers. Cory Thomas had an assist in the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse made three saves in registering his 10th shutout of the year.
The two goals allowed for IU through the team's first 12 matches are the fewest since 1979, when Indiana allowed two scores in 14 games.
After controlling the first 20 minutes of the match, the Hoosiers got on the board in the 21st minute. Working down the right side, Thomas sent a cross to the left side. The ball found Glass, who finished with a clinical header from seven yards out to give Indiana a 1-0 lead.
At halftime, IU remained in the lead, 1-0, over the Nittany Lions. In the first 45 minutes, the Hoosiers out-shot PSU, 13-1, getting seven shots on-goal to just one for Penn State. Corner kicks were even at 1-1.
In the second half, the Hoosier offensive onslaught continued, but IU was unable to find a second goal. The Indiana defense played well, however, and didn't allow Penn State to find the equalizer.
For the match, IU out-shot the Nittany Lions, 24-6, getting 12 shots on-goal to three for Penn State. Corner kicks were 5-2 in favor of the Hoosiers.
With the goal on Saturday night, Indiana has scored 30 times in the team's first 12 matches – the most for the team since scoring 31 in 1999.
The No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers will return to Bloomington, Ind. to host rival Kentucky on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Kickoff at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
