IU Splits Saturday DH in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Softball continued fall play on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Butler, picking up a 13-1 win against Heartland Community College before falling to the host Bulldogs in eight innings, 3-2.
In the first game of the day, Indiana collected 14 hits led by multi-hit efforts from senior Rebecca Blitz, juniors Gabbi Jenkins and Sarah Galovich and freshmen Mykayla Ferrari and Annika Baez.
The Hoosiers opened scoring in the first inning as Baez hit a two-out, two-run double to plate Jenkins and senior Taylor Uden. Indiana brought in three more runs in the following inning to make it 5-0 on a Heartland error, RBI single from Blitz and a sacrifice bunt by Jenkins.
Jenkins came up big again in the fourth frame as she lined a two-run single to bring home seniors Rachel O'Malley and Aimilia McDonough. Sophomore Sydney Hester capitalized on a Heartland error as the Hoosiers pushed the advantage to 8-0.
A two-run homer from freshman Maddie Westmoreland scored sophomore Katie Lacefield in the fifth frame before Ferrari singled in the sixth to plate Blitz.
Heartland got on the board in the seventh inning on an RBI single, but the Hoosiers responded by plating two more runs on RBI knocks from Lacefield and Galovich to make it 13-1.
The Indiana pitching staff allowed just two hits in the game. Junior Tara Trainer got the start and went 4.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Sophomore Emily Goodin tossed 2.0 innings of relief before redshirt sophomore Jessica Conenna stepped in for the final inning.
Against Butler, the Hoosiers scored in the seventh inning to tie the game at 2-2, but the Bulldogs would walk it off in the eighth on a Hoosier error.
The game was scoreless until the fifth frame when Butler knocked a two-out, two-run triple to right to jump to a 2-0 advantage.
Senior Taylor Uden responded for the Hoosiers as sent a two-out double to center, bringing in Blitz and Lacefield to tie the game. Uden collected a pair of hits in the game to pace the Hoosier offense.
Trainer returned to the circle in the battle against Butler, tossing 5.0 innings and striking out four. Goodin went 2.2 innings, also collected four strikeouts.
Indiana closes out fall play this Friday as the Hoosiers host Lake Land Community College for a doubleheader at Andy Mohr Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. and admission is free.
