COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 12 Ohio State was too much from the opening quarter as it handed Indiana Women's Basketball, 85-70, on New Year's Eve inside Schottenstein Center.
Junior forward Kym Royster finished with a new career-high 22 points while senior guard Tyra Buss led the way for Indiana (7-8, 0-2 B1G) with a game-high 24 points, 11 of which she scored in the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers shot just 37.1 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and went 78 percent from the free throw line.
Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn was the third player in double figures for Indiana, adding 10 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Amanda Cahill also added a team-high nine rebounds to go along with six points.
Having opportunities in the early goings, Indiana couldn't connect until over three minutes into the game as Ohio State (13-2, 2-0 B1G) built an 11-0 lead as it shot 65 percent to open the game. Buss got Indiana to under double digits with a triple, 15-7, with 5:10 to play. But the Buckeyes would build another run, this time a 7-0 advantage as it cruised to a 32-13 lead after one. The Hoosiers struggled again from the field, shooting just 25 percent in the first 10 minutes.
Indiana was outscored by just one in the second quarter, 14-13, as Royster led the way at halftime with 12 points. They faced a 46-26 deficit at halftime before coming out in the third quarter on a 7-2 run with layups from Cahill and a pair at the line by Buss. However, Ohio State pushed the lead back up to 20 with 6:22 to play and added a 50 percent clip from the floor to take a 73-49 advantage after the third.
Battling until the end, IU outscored the Buckeyes, 21-12, in the fourth quarter with 11 of those points from Buss. IU's 9-0 run midway through the final quarter helped cut down on OSU's largest lead of the game in the third quarter (28 points) but was enough in the end as it fell for the second-straight game.
