Hoosiers Drop Opener at Big Ten Match Play To Iowa

PALM COAST, Florida – The opening match of the 2017 Big Ten Match Play Championship for the Indiana men's golf team resulted in a 3-1-2 loss to Iowa at the Hammock Beach Resort Conservatory Course on Friday morning.
Junior Christian Fairbanks picked up the lone win for the Hoosiers, earning the 2-up win in his match against Sam Meuret. Fairbanks heled a 1-up lead after four holes before Meuret won the next two holes to take the 1-up lead. After Fairbanks squared the match on the seventh hole of the match, Meuret regained the lead on the 10th hole of the match, only to see Fairbanks win the the very next hole to return to all square. After tying the 12th hole, Fairbanks went back ahead on the 13th hole and then went 2-up on the 15th hole and held on for the win.
Both Brendon Doyle and Jake Brown halved their matches against Carson Schaake and Alex Schaake, respectively.
Brendon Doyle's match against Carson Schaake was tight throughout, with neither player holding more than a 2-up lead. Schaake won the first hole and then went 2-up with a win on the third hole of the match. Doyle trimmed the lead back to 1-up on the eighth hole and then squared the match on the 12th hole before going ahead on 13. Schaake was able to square things back up on 15th and the two matched scores the final three holes to end the match in a tie.
For Brown, his route to halving his match against Alex Schaake was a bit different. Brown won the first hole of the match but Schaake came back to win the next two and put Brown in a 1-down position. But Brown responded by winning the fourth hole to even the match. On the sixth hole, Schaake went back in front and then increased the lead to 2-up with a win on the 10th hole. The 12th and 13th holes hole were won by Brown to bring the match to all square. Then on the 16th hole, Schaake regained the 1-up lead and before Brown win the 18th hole to clinch the halve.
Senior Andrew Havill lost his match to Ryoto Furuya by a 4&3 margin and freshman Brock Ochsenreiter dropped a 6&5 decision.
The Hoosiers will be off during the Friday afternoon session before returning to action on Saturday for two matches. In the morning, the Hoosiers will take on Nebraska and then return to the course to take on Ohio State in the afternoon.
