AUSTIN, Texas – Indiana Softball's comeback bid fell just short as the Hoosiers fell to the University of Texas in Thursday's Texas Invitational opener, 2-1.
The Longhorns' only runs of the game came on a two-run homer by Devon Tunning in the first, bringing in Stephanie Wong, who had reached on a lead-off walk.
The Hoosiers (2-4) out-hit Texas, 6-3, however five of those base knocks came with two outs.
Sophomore pitcher Tara Trainer tossed her third complete game of the year, striking out seven.
Indiana looked to get going early as senior Erin Lehman reached on a third baseman fielding error in the first frame, but a double play on a bunt attempt from junior Rebecca Blitz ended that threat. A two-out double by CaraMia Tsirigos followed by a long at-bat for Taylor Uden resulted in a walk, but both were stranded on a flyout.
The Hoosiers again put a pair of runners on in the fourth after a two-out single by junior Rachel O'Malley and a walk to freshman Bella Norton. However, Texas' Kristen Clark picked up one of her three total strikeouts on the day.
Texas (4-2) looked to add on to the lead in the fifth after a long double by Tunning and a walk put two on with two away, but a groundout back to Trainer in the circle prevented further damage.
Indiana did get on the board in the fifth frame, prompted by junior Taylor Uden's single past a jumping Texas first baseman for her fourth hit of the young season. O'Malley then brought her in as she sent a high fly ball to left field for a double. The ball hit off Wong's glove and fell to centerfield as Uden crossed home plate. O'Malley's two hits in the contest marks her second multi-hit game of the year and extended her hitting streak to five games.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday as they face Louisiana Tech and South Carolina. Both games will be shown on the Longhorn Network, with the South Carolina game being tape delayed until 10:30 p.m. ET.
