AUSTIN, Texas – Indiana Softball dropped both games of Friday's Texas Invitational, falling to Louisiana Tech, 7-0, and to South Carolina, 13-5.
Louisiana Tech 7, Indiana 0
Freshman Emily Goodin got her first career start against Louisiana Tech, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out four. After giving up a pair of runs in the first, redshirt freshman Jessica Conenna came in a relief effort for Goodin. Both pitchers gave up three earned runs in the loss.
Jazlyn Crowder singled to lead off the game for Louisiana Tech, before a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice got the first out on a force at home, but a bases-loaded walk scored the first run. A groundout from Ali Galaz brought in Morgan Turkoly to make it 2-0.
A pair of one-out hits from junior Rebecca Blitz and senior CaraMia Tsirigos put two in scoring position for Indiana in the bottom of the first, but a lineout by junior Taylor Uden resulted in a double play.
The Lady Techsters tacked on another run in the second on an RBI triple from Crowder, plating Karlee Jensen, who reached via a walk. Crowder scored Louisiana Tech's fourth run of the day on a single to short by Turkoly.
A solo homer by Tech's Marilyn Rizzato made it 5-0 and prompted Goodin to re-enter the game in the circle. She walked a pair, but tossed a strikeout and forced a groundout to prevent further damage.
A pair of Indiana errors in the fourth proved costly as both resulted in Louisiana Tech runs. Crowder scored her second run on a throwing error by IU catcher Shayna Gamm as she was attempting to throw out a runner. On the next batter, a fielding error by third baseman Katie Lacefield plated Tori Charters.
Blitz broke a streak of seven straight batters retired for Indiana on a single to short to lead-off the frame. A Louisiana Tech fielding error on Tsirigos' grounder put two on for Indiana, but both were stranded.
Louisiana Tech made it 8-0 in the sixth on an RBI double by Taria Page, bringing in Torkoly.
The Hoosiers put runners on the corners in the bottom of the sixth on Blitz's third hit of the game and a single by Uden, however a strikeout ended the game in six innings.
South Carolina 13, Indiana 5
In the day's second game, South Carolina went long on a pair of solo homers by Mackenzie Boesel and Kaylea Snaer in the first frame of sophomore pitcher Tara Trainer.
The Gamecocks posted a five-run second inning to grab a 7-0 lead. Boesel first doubled the advantage on a base-loaded two-run single up the middle by Boesel to make it 4-0. Two Indiana errors brought in three more runs as Jordyn Augustus, Boesel and Lauren Stewart crossed home.
However, the Hoosiers would take advantage of a pair of South Carolina errors to respond in the third. After Lacefield and Tsirigos reached on those miscues, Uden sent a bloop single to right center to score Lacefield. O'Malley then picked up her team-leading eighth hit of the year on a double to left, scoring pinch runner Sydney Hester and Uden to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Indiana carried that momentum into the defensive half of the inning, putting up the first scoreless frame of the game.
Another South Carolina fielding error put Norton on board to lead off the fourth, followed by a single by senior Kayla Mathewson. Blitz's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position before a walk to Tsirigos loaded the bases. Uden's second base knock of the game closed the gap to 7-5 as she brought in pinch runner Sarah Galovich and Mathewson.
The Gamecocks pushed their lead to 11-5 in the fourth, using four hits and a sacrifice fly. After the first run scored, Conenna came in to relieve Goodin, but could not prevent further damage.
A pair of walks in the fifth set the stage for an RBI single by Victoria Williams before a sacrifice fly from Snaer ended the game in five innings with a score of 13-5.
Indiana wraps up play in the Texas Invitational on Saturday as the Hoosiers will face Texas at 11 a.m. ET and South Carolina at 1:30 p.m. ET. Both games will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network.
