"We have an experienced team coming back, we are looking for new leaders to step up. There has been a lot of energy out there for workouts, and it has been exciting."
On being a leader…
"Absolutely, but it is one of those things that we have a lot of guys that played, a lot of people that did not talk much because we had solid leader last year. We are trying to find those people to step up and talk more. That is what we are looking for."
On three early enrollees …
"They have a competitive edge. That is what we need in this program, people that are going to come in and compete 24/7. They will certainly help this team be better."
On offseason improvements …
"My flexibility. Being able to survive a whole season in the Big Ten I have to be flexible and stay healthy."
OL Wes Martin
"It is definitely going fast. It seems like yesterday that I walked onto campus. It has been a smooth transition. I think that the guys that have been here before have prepared me for it. They have taught me the ropes as far as how to lead and get the other guys prepared."
On looking back to prior teammates for leadership …
"Absolutely. I definitely picked up a lot from them. Watching and listening to them and how they conducted themselves in a leadership role."
On coach Darren Hiller …
"I definitely like him. We have not been able to spend a lot of time with him. They have been trying to prepare themselves for spring ball. We have not spent a lot of time together, but the time we have spent has been good."
On the "BreakThrough" motto …
"To me it means doing all of the little things right, so we can win those close games that we seem to be in and come up short in a lot of times."
On coach Hiller's message…
"His message is just paying attention to the little things. That is where we are starting, just the basic stuff, right now."
Director of Athletic Performance, Football Keith Caton
"We do a lot of aerobic work, so we will do tempo runs and things like that. That allows them to not go full speed, get recovery time but still elevates their heart rate the entire time. That helps them recover faster in between plays. We run an up-tempo offense, so we have to be in shape that way. We do that to get those guys aerobically fit. We do sprinting with sleds, straight up sprints and the heavy squats in the weight room. We work two different systems and we try to work them on different days."
On any changes in the weight room …
"We are just going to continue to progress. We took what we did last year and made modifications to it. We are just trying to get better and better. The tempo of the offense, talking to coach DeBord, he wants a fast tempo offense. We are doing the same training, but we modifying things and advancing a few things."
On early enrollees …
"All those guys are doing great. Those guys are fitting in and adjusting well. They are working hard and doing a great job for us."
On Wes Martin …
"He is doing a great job. First off, he has always been a great leader by example. He has always been a guy that has worked hard. He shows up early, stays late to get extra work and he is always one of the first once to complete the drills. He has been that type of guy, but now he has to be more vocal. He has been working on that the last couple of weeks by calling guys in, getting guys going in the right direction, putting his arm around him, raising his voice if he needs to but he is doing a lot better heading in that direction."
On what "BreakThrough" means…
"It is the start of everything for us in the weight room. This is winter, this is the offseason. We have seven weeks and this is week six. This is our area to start the whole process. We are trying to get bigger, we are trying to get faster and we are trying to get stronger. We are trying to bring a team together. We lost seniors so we lost leadership. This is a great time for us to step up and become leaders. This is a great time for us to come together as a team and initiate that breakthrough, which is what coach Allen wants."
On the progress of the team …
"We are never where we want to be. They have gotten stronger though. We just had some guys hit PRs on squats today. We had a lot of good squats today. Our guys are getting stronger and they are getting more explosive. We are never where we need to be. We have a couple group going, as you probably saw, so we have some guys doing some different stuff. The one group is a little more advanced and they are really strong already. Now we need to make sure they get more powerful and can reproduce that play after play. They need to stay fast and explosive and not just continue to get stronger."
