BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Indiana Softball dropped a 4-2 decision to Samford on Saturday afternoon in the Samford/UAB Tournament.
The Hoosiers (4-8) saw its third homer in two games, this time off the bat of junior Aimilia McDonough, who scored both runs in the game, but stranded 11 total runners in the loss.
IU put two runners on to lead off the third as freshman Katie Lacefield was hit by a pitch and junior Rebecca Blitz collected the first base knock of the game on a bloop single to left center. However, Indiana was unable to capitalize.
Samford struck first in the bottom of the third as Shelby Maze sent a two-out double to right center to plate Madison Couch and Whitney Hinton.
McDonough cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth as she smacked a two-out solo homer off the scoreboard in right field. It was the first homer in an Indiana uniform for McDonough and her second of her career, as she also had one at Ole Miss in 2015.
The Bulldogs responded in the home half of the inning on a two-run homer by Hannah Trombley to left field.
Freshman Emily Goodin got the start for Indiana in the circle but was relieved by redshirt freshman Jessica Conenna following Trombley's homer.
Conenna retired the first four batters faced before surrendering a single in the fifth, however first baseman Taylor Uden ended the frame on an unassisted double play as she caught a line drive and stepped on the bag. The righty tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in her fifth appearance of the year.
A productive sixth inning got one back for Indiana. O'Malley singled to start the frame and a pair of walks and fielder's choices loaded the bases. Sophomore Nicole Lawvere was hit by a pitch with the bases still jammed to bring in McDonough and make it 4-2.
Trainer stepped into the circle in the bottom of the sixth, retiring the Bulldogs in order and picking up a pair of strikeouts.
Indiana's final chance to extend the game came as the Hoosiers put runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh on a single by Uden and a Bulldog fielding error, but a groundout ended the game.
IU closes out play in the Samford/UAB Tournament on Sunday against Murray State and UAB. Stats and a live radio broadcast of both games will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
