
Hoosiers Top Western Kentucky, Evansville

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team finished a challenging weekend of three matches with two victories on Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (5-2) started the day with a 4-2 win over Western Kentucky and closed with a 4-3 win over Evansville.
"I was very proud of our team today," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "I thought everyone stepped up and played well in challenging circumstances today. We knew it was going to be a tough weekend and we handled it well."
Against Western Kentucky the Hoosiers and Hilltoppers split one and three doubles, so it came down to the No. 2 doubles match, which went to a tiebreaker. Senior Paula Gutierrez and freshman Pauline Jahren were able to close it out with a 7-5 win in the tiebreak to get the Hoosiers the doubles point.
Western Kentucky took a brief 2-1 lead in the match as they won the first two singles matches. Jahren evened it and sophomore Caitlin Bernard put the Hoosiers up 3-1. Graduate student Alicia Robinson clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 7-5, 6-2 win.
After about an hour and a half break the Hoosiers resumed play against Evansville. The Hoosiers top two doubles teams won, 6-3 and 6-2 to put the Hoosiers up 1-0 in the match.
Senior Kim Schmider put the Hoosiers up 2-0, but Evansville counted with a win at No. 4 singles to make it 2-1. Gutierrez won 6-2, 6-4 to put Indiana up 3-1. Evansville continued to fight as they got a second set tiebreak to win a match at No. 2 singles.
Jahren, who has posted a 4-1 record in dual match play clinched the match for the Hoosiers with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles.
After seven matches at home, the Hoosiers hit the road next week to take on Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sunday February 12.
