CINCINNATI, Ohio – Indiana baseball (3-4-1) dropped its first midweek game of the season, 6-1, to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday night at Marge Schott Stadium.
Junior Laren Eustace collected a hit and scored a run in the effort. Senior Tony Butler tallied his first double of the season. Indiana was held to three hits by the Cincinnati staff.
Freshman Cal Krueger tossed three innings, allowing one hit and two unearned runs while striking out three batters.
After trading 1-2-3 trips to the plate in the first inning, Indiana looked for the game's first opportunity in the second frame. Sophomore Ryan Fineman took a 1-0 pitch down the line in right field for a one out single and senior Austin Cangelosi fought for a two out walk to put two on. Butler loaded the bases following a hit-by-pitch, but Indiana would be unable to produce a run.
A wild pitch in the third inning helped Indiana manufacture the game's first run. Eustace led off the inning by reaching first off an errant play on his bunt attempt. He advanced to second when senior Craig Dedelow was plunked, and took third on a wild pitch. Sowers' groundout scored Eustace to give Indiana a 1-0 lead.
Cincinnati responded in the bottom of the third with two runs before pushing across four runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.
Butler took a two-out opportunity down the left field line for a double in the sixth but would be stranded.
Indiana squares off against Samford for a three-game set beginning at 5 p.m. ET on Friday from Birmingham, Ala.
