BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball dropped the final game of the series to Rutgers on Saturday, 7-5. The Hoosiers (16-15, 2-1 Big Ten) secured the series win on Friday with a pair of wins against the Scarlet Knights (8-21, 1-2 Big Ten).
Rutgers used three home runs to take the victory, including a pair off the bat of Sierra Maddox. For the Hoosiers, junior Rebecca Blitz led the way with two hits, a run and an RBI. The game extended the Birmingham native's hitting streak to 10 games while freshman Gabbi Jenkins pushed hers to a team-best 11 games.
For the third time in the series, Indiana jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-run double by senior Erin Lehman in the first, plating Blitz and junior Taylor Uden. A double by Rachel O'Malley scored Lehman to push the Indiana lead to 3-0.
However, Rutgers took the lead for good in the third frame, scoring five runs on five hits, capped by a three-run homer by Maddox to left field.
The Scarlet Knights extended their advantage to 7-3 in the fifth inning on a pair of solo homers by Rebecca Hall and Maddox.
IU loaded the bags in the fifth as a fielding error by Rutgers on a grounder from Lehman allowed freshman Gabbi Jenkins to score. Blitz then cut the deficit to 7-5 in the sixth on an RBI single to the Rutgers shortstop to score senior Kayla Mathewson. However, the Hoosiers wouldn't get closer as they went down in order in the final inning.
Sophomore Tara Trainer took the loss for IU as she allowed four runs in 2.2 innings of work. Redshirt sophomore Emily Kirk turned in an impressive relief effort as she went 2.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just three hits.
Indiana returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to Louisville for a mid-week non-conference battle. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
