Hoosiers Drop Defensive Battle at Louisville, 2-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indiana Softball dropped a 2-1 decision to Louisville on Wednesday night at Ulmer Stadium. The Hoosiers (16-16) carried a 1-0 lead into the fifth but the Cardinals (20-8) picked up a two-run single in the inning to clinch the win.
Indiana saw just two hits on the night, which came off the bats of junior Aimilia McDonough and freshman Katie Lacefield.
Sophomore Tara Trainer took the loss in the circle, but pitched solidly in her 10th complete game of the year, surrendering just one earned run.
After seeing the first six batters retired in order, the Hoosiers finally broke through in the third as McDonough singled to lead off the inning. After a single and stolen base by Lacefield put two in scoring position, junior Rebecca Blitz grounded into an RBI fielder's choice, bringing McDonough home to put Indiana up, 1-0.
A Cardinal single and walk threatened to tie things up in the fourth, but Blitz made a diving snag in left center to get the final out and keep the lead intact.
Louisville loaded the bases in the following inning after a single, IU fielding error and intentional walk. The Cardinals used a two-run single by Nicole Pufahl to take the 2-1 lead as she sent one up the middle to plate Morgan Meyer and Caitlin Ferguson.
Blitz again flashed the leather in the sixth inning to work the Hoosiers out of a jam. After back-to-back one-out singles, Blitz made a diving in grab in right center before recovering to double up the runner at first, who had rounded second and headed to third base when Blitz caught the ball.
However, the IU bats went down in order in the top of the seventh as Louisville pitcher Maryssa Becker secured her 15th win of the season.
Indiana returns to Big Ten action this weekend as the Hoosiers travel to Penn State. First pitch for the series is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
